General Information

The currency of Thailand is the "Baht".  One baht is probably the smallest coin you will actually use, although some of the larger stores will give you small coins known as Satang.  There are 100 satang to a baht.  Dominations come in one baht coin, five baht coin, 10 baht coin (and a few left in notes), 20 baht note, 50 baht note, 100 baht note, 500 baht note and 1000 baht note, the largest.

As of Jan. 2010 the baht is floating between 33 and 33.5 baht to the US dollar.  Check the currency calculator for an accurate exchange rate:  http://www.xe.com/ucc/

Automated Teller Machines (ATM) are plentiful throughout Thailand, and most accept cards of the major international networks (Plus, Cirrus, etc.)  Travelers Checks are generally accepted only at exchanges, and not elsewhere.  (leave them at home and travel with your ATM cards)

NOTE:  Recently International credit or debit cards are being charged a fee of 150 baht PER TRANSACTION from all ATM machines in Thailand.

Major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and major shops.  American Express is excepted in some larger or high end establishments.  Many businesses will charge you anywhere from 3% to 5% to put your purchases on a credit card.  However, larger hotels and shopping malls will honor the card at no extra charge.

If you on an extended stay in Thailand, you might find it convenient to open a 'SAVINGS' bank account in one of the major Thai banks (Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank). You'll only need your passport and 200 baht to pay for the debit card that will be issued within minutes (you can also choose your pin code). You'll be able to take money at any ATM. There will be a small charge (20 baht) when you withdraw from other banks. In addition some cards allow you to pay directly in hotels, restaurants, shops.  You can request an "International debit card" which you will be able to use back home.  No reason to carry alot of money around, as there are ATM's on just about every street corner throughout Thailand.
