Travel within Thailand
Traveling within Thailand is varied and relatively cheap. From buses to trains to Domestic Airlines, rental cars, all types of boats, motorcycles, taxis, mini-vans, and even horse drawn carts, you can travel anywhere in Thailand.
Unless you are traveling to Thailand in the middle of High Season, it might be advisable for you to plan your domestic travel, WHEN you arrive in Thailand. You will be offered many more options, rates and possibilities from local tour operators, hotels and airlines. A booking at a good hotel on your arrival date and for the next day or two is a good idea. It affords you the time to look around, especially if you are a first timer, and get caught up on rest and acclimate to the climate. Then you can start planning your travel. If you show up with your itinerary set and pre-paid, you’re stuck with that plan. One thing you learn in Thailand, keep your options open. Weather, Thai Holidays, political situations and other unpredictable factors may change your mind and length of stay in any particular spot. Even in the high season (different areas have different “high” seasons) you can usually find transport and accommodations without a big fuss. Discounts can be found and negotiated freely.
Bangkok is centrally located and you can fly just about anywhere in Thailand within an hour.
The top tourist destinations such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Pattaya (drive from Bangkok) have many flights, trains, buses or mini-vans that can get you there in a timely fashion. The roads are fairly good so don’t worry about renting a car and driving yourself. Of course, if you are from the United States or Canada you’ll be driving on the wrong side of the road. Don’t worry, it comes naturally, as the steering wheel is also on the wrong side. Just keep that white line on your right shoulder and you’ll do OK!
